what’s the difference between the law of attraction and overconfidence?
I often hear that for the law of attraction to work, you should believe that you already have what you are trying to attract. Does that mean that you should do something reckless like buying a bunch of things that you can’t afford because you believe that you will get a lot of wealth anyway.
If someone would be tempted to believe in the law of attraction, he could certainly buy into the notion that since he will become rich, he might as well enjoy his riches now by dipping into questionable credit opportunities or carelessly overspending.
However, my personal belief is that the law of attraction is a new age conceptualization which is outside the boundaries of science, including psychology.

The Law of Attraction is the knowledge that you can get what you want.
Overconfidence is the presumption that you can beat the odds without the odds beating you.
Two different things. There’s a difference between knowledge and assumption.
EDIT:
Michelle S doesn’t know anything about the Law of Attraction. If she did, she’d know that Anthony Robbins is a self-improvement speaker, and not a Law of Attraction coach. She just posts the same thing on any LoA question she sees in the hopes of having someone go to her website link that is included in the answer she cuts-and-pastes to every LoA question.
The Law of Attraction has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with quantum physics and there are no ‘top scientists’ studying it right now.

I know how to use the Law of Attraction.
I believe in the Law of Attraction and have been studying it by reading books and listening to C.D’s by well known people (Jack Canfield, Bob Proctor, Anthony Robbins, Michael J. Losier and others) who have lived and become rich by using this law.
You don’t buy things you can’t afford, but you visualize what you want in the present tense. One book I have is called "Jack Canfield’s Key to Living the Law of Attraction" by Jack Canfield and D.D. Watkins. This book talks about different aspects of the Law of Attraction such as Focus on the positive, Abundance, Purpose and passions, affirmations, visualizations etc.
In the chapter about affirmations, the book speaks about making affirmations about your goals. One example is "I am happily stepping through the door of my brand new dream home"
It works better if you close your eyes and visualize your goals and say the affirmations out loud 3 or more times a day. Get to a place where you feel the emotion of it. One way to do this is if your goal is for a dream home. Visualize yourself walking around the home and visualize the view from your window, the smells of your furniture, the feel of the carpet, etc. as this makes it more real for your brain and puts you in more of a place to attract what you want.
A vision board is good too. I am putting one together for myself. Right now to start I have a picture of a $100,000 bill on my fridge.
I have gone to seminars to learn more about it as well and my friend has won 3 draws in seminars using the law of attraction.
I have some personal experience in the Law of Attraction. I went to a four day internet seminar last year and envisioned myself winning one of the raffle prizes at the last day. I envisioned my numbers being called, and me running up to the stage and hugging the presenters and receiving my prize. On the last day my numbers were called and I did as I envisioned – I ran up to the stage, hugged the presenters and claimed my prize.
I have also won a $5,000 credit on my credit card which helped pay for some courses I signed up for.
I really wanted to see Jack Canfield coming to my city as I have never seen him live and I focused on it frequently and I finally found out he was coming signed up with two other people who wanted to see him. I really enjoyed his talk.
The Law of Attraction has something to do with Quantum Physics which scientists are studying right now and boils down to: if you focus on good things, you will feel more positive and generate at a higher frequency and attract what you want. If you focus on bad things, you will feel more negative and generate a lower frequency and attract the things you don’t want in life.
Hope this is helpful.

Hi Joe!
Here’s the deal…
The Law of Attraction is the basic concept of ‘You get what you focus on for the majority of the time.’
Everybody has repetitive thoughts and in those thoughts lie the key to what you are attracting. Most people are focused on what they don’t want and the key to the Law of Attraction is to train yourself to focus on what you do want instead of what you don’t want.
Typically, overconfidence is just a symptom of, and a way to cover, lack of confidence.
The Law of Attraction isn’t half as mystical as everybody pretends it is. Think of yourself as a magnet and ask yourself what you are attracting. In fact, if you want to know what you really believe, just take a look at what your life looks like.
Go Big!
Kristen
