A Problem with The Law of Attraction

Sometimes it’s just plain amusing to see how the Universe gives you literally what you ask for.

After four years of cleaning our substantial Victorian home alone, I wanted a cleaning lady. Would I find someone who could meet my expectations?

My past experiences in Holland with cleaning ladies made me believe that even if I found someone, she’d probably have some unacceptable flaws that I couldn’t fix. At the same time, I knew that unless I gave up my preconceived idea about this, I’d attract exactly what I believed.

Let me take you back in time so you can see how The Law of Attraction reflects our beliefs without delay.

While looking at the mess one day in Holland, I called out out loud, “Today I’ll find a cleaning lady.” My hope is deepfelt, and precisely Universe replies to my request.

I do find a cleaning lady that day. Unfortunately, I don’t remember to ask for a cleaning lady with cleaning characteristics. I get what I invite: a cleaning lady without cleaning qualities. Anita enjoys her position as a cleaning lady in my house. Of course she does. All of Anita’s worries come to the coffee table as she tells me why she can’t be helped.

She gets a free session of therapy during coffee break (in Holland, you have to sit with your cleaning ladies and drink coffee), and she can even bring her rambunctious youngster along, who’s allowed to ride her bike in my living room.

Usually, I clean along with Anita. But after a while, I start to hide in my bedroom in order to escape her erratic energy. I find myself dreading Thursday mornings when she and her screaming daughter enter our sacred castle.

Anita doesn’t last long. She cancels five times in a row, and then tells me her cat jumped in a pan on the stove, she burned herself, and broke her arm while saving the cat. I know the time has come to look for someone else.

This time I ask the Universe to give me a cleaning lady to whom I don’t have to give therapy. No kids allowed, either, during cleaning hours. I get what I ask for. Myra follows Anita. She doesn’t bring her kid, but she’s a pregnant lady from Morocco who’s expecting her sixth child.

It’s obvious that she isn’t the the most spotless cleaning lady out there, but she doesn’t want a therapy session over coffee, either. She hardly speaks a word of Dutch. It’s convenient and awkward at the same time. Sign language works well between us. We spend a lot of time smiling at each other. I’m happy.

I do anything for her convenience, and often submit to her unusual petitions. I even pick her up and returned her home because her long robe makes it impossible to ride a bike, and she doesn’t own a car. We both agree that Myra can no longer come to clean for us when she is seven months’ pregnant. Again, it’s time to move on.

I’ve been taught my lesson at this point, and I pledge to myself that I will state my intent very clearly the next time I put out my request for a cleaning lady. This time I pray for a combination of no therapy, no talking, and good cleaning skills.

I had no idea that the last two words of my intent – no talking – would backfire on me. (Why did I ask for that?) We have to be careful what we wish for! Read on…

It takes years to get back my courage to resume the search for a new cleaning lady, but after four years of cleaning our big, old Victorian house in the States, I again put out my request to the Universe.

My prayers are answered three days later, and my life alters when Nina walks into my home. I’m astounded at what a good cleaner she is. She cleans like she’s a fairy with a magic wand. I adore her, but she doesn’t speak English. Sign language, too, is not in her repertoire. She gets utterly flustered when I try. So my house is cleaned in “her way.” And that’s alright.

As an example of how exact the Law of Attraction is, every Thursday morning at 8:00 AM when Nina arrived at at our home to clean, I welcomed her with “Good morning.” She replied: “Good night.” Do I need to say more?
